How did you end up in Barcelona?

I moved to Barcelona after a family I had taught for a year in Sydney Australia asked if I would come teach their children for three months. I enthusiastically accepted, and what was supposed to be a short stay turned into six years of working closely with them, teaching their boys GCSEs and A Levels. The relationship we built became like family, and I never looked back.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I’ve always had a passion for working with young people and being their biggest supporter. Watching students discover their strengths and grow into individuals ready to impact the world is incredibly rewarding. I believe everyone has the potential to achieve their goals, especially when they’re surrounded by people who believe in them. Teaching allows me to be that person who encourages them and helps them realise their dreams. I also love the challenge of making learning accessible and meaningful, connecting lessons to the world beyond the classroom so that students never have to wonder, “Why do we need to learn this?”

Favourite Book/Movie:

Cinema Paradiso, directed by Giuseppe Tornatore

What do you like most about working at TLA? What I love most is the connection with students and the opportunity to learn about different cultures. At TLA, we have students and teachers from all corners of the globe, which creates an incredibly rich environment. It’s fascinating to see how much we can learn from each other, and I believe it truly prepares our students for the world. Being part of that experience is amazing.

Which TLA Value resonates with you the most and why? Curiosity, without a doubt. I think curiosity is the foundation for growth. Whether it’s learning about people, cultures, food, or ideas, it keeps life exciting. It’s also a value I try to instill in our students—if they stay curious, there’s no limit to what they can achieve.

How did you end up in Barcelona?

After having my first daughter we moved here in 2018 to improve our quality of life- and it certainly has! I love living here.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I think I’ve always wanted to be a teacher! When I was little I used to line my toys up and take registers- although I know now that there is much more to teaching than that! It’s wonderful to see students grow and develop and I really love to see them improve their skills and learn new things. Everyday is different in teaching and I like to think creatively to help students achieve their potential.

How did you end up in Barcelona?

After finishing my studies, I decided to take a gap year to teach English and experience life away from home. I spent a year and a half in Barcelona, and during that time, I fell in love with the city. However, an opportunity arose for a job in Amsterdam, so I relocated there. Unfortunately, that position fell through, and I found myself back in South Africa, working and searching for ways to return to Europe. By a stroke of luck, I was offered a position at TLA, which brought me back to the vibrant city of Barcelona.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I’ve always had a passion for working with children. Initially, I considered studying occupational therapy, but it was very competitive. Since I loved science, I pursued a degree in it at university. However, I realised that research-focused careers weren’t for me. I then decided to do my PGCE, which turned out to be the best decision. I absolutely love teaching, as it lets me combine my interests in science and working with children.

Favourite Book/Movie: “Where the Crawdads Sing” – Delia Owens

I like the freedom I have to conduct my lessons and all the amazing events and excursions that we do.
