How did you end up in Barcelona?

After having my first daughter we moved here in 2018 to improve our quality of life- and it certainly has! I love living here.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I think I’ve always wanted to be a teacher! When I was little I used to line my toys up and take registers- although I know now that there is much more to teaching than that! It’s wonderful to see students grow and develop and I really love to see them improve their skills and learn new things. Everyday is different in teaching and I like to think creatively to help students achieve their potential.

Favourite Book/Movie: ´‘All the Light we cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr.

What do you like most about working at TLA? TLA students are the best- so kind and open and there is a really great community in our school. As a teacher having small class sizes is also wonderful as I can give every student more focussed and individualised support and get to know them all well. I really enjoy all of my classes and there is always a lot of laughter!

Which TLA Value resonates with you the most and why? I love how globally minded and diverse our school is and I think it’s important for our students to embrace and celebrate this multiculturalism. It makes our school are really interesting place.

How did you end up in Barcelona?

After finishing my studies, I decided to take a gap year to teach English and experience life away from home. I spent a year and a half in Barcelona, and during that time, I fell in love with the city. However, an opportunity arose for a job in Amsterdam, so I relocated there. Unfortunately, that position fell through, and I found myself back in South Africa, working and searching for ways to return to Europe. By a stroke of luck, I was offered a position at TLA, which brought me back to the vibrant city of Barcelona.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I’ve always had a passion for working with children. Initially, I considered studying occupational therapy, but it was very competitive. Since I loved science, I pursued a degree in it at university. However, I realised that research-focused careers weren’t for me. I then decided to do my PGCE, which turned out to be the best decision. I absolutely love teaching, as it lets me combine my interests in science and working with children.

Favourite Book/Movie: “Where the Crawdads Sing” – Delia Owens

These allow me to build strong relationships with each student, understand their unique goals, and tailor the learning experience to meet their individual needs.

Which TLA Value resonates with you the most and why? The value of compassion resonates with me the most because it emphasises meaningful human connections and kindness. It creates an inclusive, supportive environment and fosters cooperation and harmony. By promoting empathy and peaceful resolutions, we can bridge divides and contribute to a more just and peaceful world.

How did you end up in Barcelona?

I ended up in Barcelona in 2020, moving with my family from Lebanon due to the economic and political instability there. We chose Barcelona because we have a strong connection to the city—my husband lived here for many years, making it a familiar and comfortable place for us to relocate to.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I decided to become a teacher because I have always been passionate about teaching and being around kids. This passion grew even stronger after I had my own children. I love working with young people and wish to make a positive impact on their lives.

Favourite Book/Movie: “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom
