Honest reflections from parents and graduates about life at The Learn Academy.
An amazing new style of teaching and learning environment which is built around a passion for modern education. Hannah has created an amazing place for young people to learn. We came to Barcelona in 2016 from Australia and after a stint at another school, we were looking for something more motivating, dynamic, responsive, relevant and capable for our now 16 year old son. The combination of incredibly passionate, capable teachers, a really nice space, and wonderful values weave their way through the everyday to drive greater interest and passion in the young adults who are lucky enough to attend. It is world class. And first class. And apparently quite a fun class.
I have been attending classes with the centre’s teachers and worked alongside the Director, Hannah Grech, for over 5 years now. The service and dedication they provide is unmatched in Barcelona. The atmosphere is also excellent and curated well by the teachers who build a trustworthy platform for students to express themselves and relate to others, something that is lacking at other institutions in the city. Would highly recommend the group/personal classes as well as the full time A level program as I have really enjoyed and benefited working so closely with their teachers.
I’ve been attending this school for 2 years now, and I can comfortably say it is the best school in Barcelona by a long shot. The teachers are all excellent, they provide a warm, safe, and fun learning environment for students, and they excel at teaching their respective courses in a dynamic manner. The overall vibe of the school is incredibly warm and welcoming, all of the students get along really well, and the class sizes create a very close-knit environment. It’s evident that the teachers really care about the overall health and well-being of their students, not just their grades.

Moments from daily life at The Learn Academy.
Daily Life at TLA
The Learn Academy follows the Catalan academic calendar, running from September to June and broken into 3 terms.
Schedule
The school day commences promptly at 8:50 am and concludes at 4:15 pm.
Throughout the day, there are 5 class periods, each lasting 1 hour and 25 minutes.
Compulsory school hours are from 10 am to 3 pm. During this time, students must either attend classes, utilise study rooms on campus, or study outside or in a local cafe.
Each day at 10 am, students must be on campus daily for a 20-minute form group session, where attendance is taken and safety ensured. Any absences prompt email notifications to parents. Sessions cover topics like mental health, cultural celebrations, and global citizenship projects.
Outside of these mandatory hours, students have flexibility to arrive late or depart early from campus.
Study Periods
Using the iPads conveniently located near the entrance, students have the option to sign themselves out and study in nearby cafes or outdoor spaces within a designated radius.
We encourage students to strike a balance between off-campus study periods and utilising the on-site study rooms to maximise productivity.
Study periods play a vital role in A Level preparation, assisting students in effectively managing their homework and study commitments.
Weekly Timetable
TLA includes a weekly assembly into the timetable. It is a time where we come together as a school community, share achievements and announcements, and present awards to celebrate the achievements of our students.
We offer a diverse range of extracurricular activities scheduled through the week, such as Duke of Edinburgh, book club, Model United Nations, and various student-led groups.
The International A Levels
A globally recognised pathway that gives students the freedom to specialise, play to their strengths, and build a focused academic foundation for university success.
At The Learn Academy, students follow an internationally respected A-Level pathway designed for the final years of school. Rather than spreading effort across a broad set of subjects, students are able to concentrate on the areas most relevant to their future ambitions.
Ages 16–17
Ages 17–18
While most students follow the typical progression from age 16 to 18, we also support students whose academic pathway begins later, ensuring every learner receives the same high-quality preparation and guidance.
Why International A-Levels?
International A Levels provide a focused and flexible academic experience that helps students prepare confidently for top universities worldwide.
Depth Over Breadth
While the IB requires students to study six subjects, A-Levels allow students to focus deeply on 3–4 subjects of their choice. This provides a level of expertise that is highly appealing to university admissions teams.
Play To Strengths
The A-Level curriculum enables students to tailor their learning to their strengths and future aspirations, avoiding unnecessary pressure to study areas that may not align with their interests or career goals.
Equally Competitive for Global Universities
Just like the IB, A-Levels are widely accepted by the world’s leading institutions, including Ivy League universities, Oxbridge, and top-tier European and Asian schools.
Pathways to University Success
At The Learn Academy, preparing students for university is central to everything we do. Throughout their time at TLA, students receive personalised guidance to explore their options, build strong applications, and secure places at leading universities around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions
We know families often have important questions when considering a new school. Here are answers to some of the most common queries about admissions, curriculum, student life, and day-to-day practicalities at The Learn Academy.
Speak to HannahWhat is the criteria for admission?
At TLA, we look carefully through each child’s application. We look for motivated learners with solid academic transcripts and strong English language skills.
We do not stipulate specific grade entry requirements, but we do want to see evidence of commitment to learning.
What are the A Levels?
The International A-levels are the international version of the British A-level qualification. Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels (IAL) are globally recognised qualifications that open doors to top universities worldwide. It is the final school qualification, usually taken by students aged 16–18 years.
Edexcel International Advanced Level qualifications are recognised by many leading universities in the UK and internationally. You can find the growing list of universities accepting these qualifications on the Edexcel IAL university recognition list and university recognition guide.
Students can take up to four A Levels, with most universities requiring a minimum of three.
Our students sit their exams in May/June each year. This is a two-year qualification, with exams occurring at the end of the first year and again at the end of the second year. A student’s final grade in each subject is made up of the marks awarded after exams in both the first and second year of the qualification.
What grade levels does TLA admit?
TLA caters for students aged 15 years and over.
This translates to Years 11, 12 and 13 in the British curriculum, which is the same as Grades 10, 11 and 12 in the American curriculum.
In some cases, we may be able to accept students in Year 10 in the British system (Grade 9 in the American curriculum), as they will be working towards the same GCSE exams as the grade above.
What subjects do you offer at A-level?
We offer the following subjects at A-level, depending on student preferences. Not all of these subjects will always be available each year, but we do our best to offer a wide selection.
- Spanish
- English Literature
- Mathematics
- Biology, Physics and Chemistry
- Art and Design: Photography
- Art and Design: Fine Art
- Business
- Economics
- Psychology
- Information Technology (IT)

Do students wear uniforms?
No, we do not require our students to wear uniforms.
Is there a meal service?

We are located in the centre of Barcelona and surrounded by shops, including L’illa shopping centre across the street, Starbucks one block away, and a café right next door.
Do you offer an after school programme?

- Coding

What languages are offered?
All classes are delivered in English. We also offer Spanish classes to our students.
Spanish classes are divided into two levelled groups. We can also offer other languages, such as French, if there is sufficient student interest.
Can my child start at any time throughout the year?
This depends on the individual child and the curriculum they have been studying.
It can be discussed on a case-by-case basis, but yes, it is possible to start throughout the school year.
